Westcoast RTLB cluster focus on spelling
A considerable amount of research and effort has been devoted to assisting students with reading problems in recent years. However, much less attention has been devoted to students who have spelling difficulties. Spelling is most often the remaining difficulty even after considerable interventions for the dyslexic student.
For the majority of dyslexic students, fluency in reading does not bring about fluency in spelling and writing. It’s great to hear that spelling is a specific focus for 2009 for a RTLB cluster of schools on the Westcoast. The remedial programme they are using takes advantage of technology innovations and recognises the phonetic code as a stepping stone to correct spelling. We will keep you posted on this initiative.
